Good Afternoon! I just got home from a recording session so forgive my tardiness.
I am pooped! Today I started narrating the audio book “Game-Based Marketing” by Gabe Zichermann and Joselin Linder and blabbed for four hours. That works out to almost 70 pages.
I wanna talk about this book. It is freaking amazing! I had no idea how much “gamification” has permeated our lives. Everything from Frequent Flyer Miles to World of Warcraft to bank/grocery store/coffee shop Rewards Programs. It’s all about “leveling up” and earning points, badges and rewards for just about everything we do nowadays. It turns out that people are totally engrossed in not just being competitive “I have more Facebook friends than you. Ha!” but in watching people being competitive “Who’s gonna get eliminated from Idol this week?”.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, sure, the fact that there are now World of Warcraft “widow” support groups and people sometimes take unnecessary flights just to rack up points, but having fun with something you’re gonna buy anyway is fine. It’s one of those many nice little distractions that can help you get through your day.
TIP OF THE WEEK: Buy this book! Hold it. Rewind a bit. Wait for the audio book to come out, and then buy it! Authors Gabe Zichermann and Joselin Linder are brilliant, wonderful people with whom I have had the pleasure of corresponding with. This is a book that you can apply to any business model and come up with a unique, successful marketing plan. Check it out!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: A professional is a person who can do his best at a time when he doesn’t particularly feel like it. Alistair Cooke
STUFF!: Again, despite my uber-business, I managed to catch some great flicks last week: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and (albeit a bit late) Hotel Rwanda. Both are must-sees!
