It’s fun to play with new microphones. What better place to do that than B&H!
Carin Gilfry of the Voice Actors of NYC Facebook group organized an outing to B&H in Manhattan for an equipment demo.

That’s us at B&H
Just behind us to the left is a booth with dozens of mics lined up. We went in groups of two to try some of them out, also known as a “mic shootout”.
The Microphone Shootout
They set up a Neuman TLM 102, a TLM 103, and a Sennheiser MKH-416 for us to play around with.
I went in with my buddy Melissa Exelberth. We both own a 416 so it was interesting for us to try out the 102 & 103 and then the 416. It confirmed that the 416 is right for both of us.
A big thank you to Carin and the folks at B&H for a fun trip!
TIP OF THE WEEK
If your recording gear ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
My 416 works great for my sound and the genres I work in so I don’t plan on getting a new mic anytime soon. Some of you use different mics for different genres and that makes sense if you get enough of each type of work.
While the quality of your recording gear is critical to being a successful voiceover business, don’t get too caught up in the technical minutia and upgrading your recording gear constantly.
Today’s outing to B&H also reinforces the value of spending time with real humans in person. I met some great new people, got to hang out with old friends, and had a lot of fun. Analog networking trumps digital networking every time!
