Voiceovers And Successful Relationships – The Not Silent Blog 3/14/17

My friend Liana is a professional matchmaker. She works for a great company called Tawkify and she often posts fantastic articles about dating, love, and relationships. Last week Liana curated another great one: Every Relationship Is Successful For The Exact Same Reasons.

It’s a long article and I strongly recommend you read it, but I’ll give you the gist. The recently-married author asked for relationship advice via the online magazine Quartz from people who have been happily married for 10+ years . He got over 1,500 responses!

There are 13 points in the article, but for our purposes I want to focus on just one of them:

The most important factor in a relationship is not communication, but respect.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Here’s a clip from that point:

…the only thing that can save you and your partner, that can cushion you both to the hard landing of human fallibility, is an unerring respect for one another, the fact that you hold each other in high esteem, believe in one another—often more than you each believe in yourselves—and trust that your partner is doing his/her best with what they’ve got.

TIP OF THE WEEK

The key to successful relationships with your clients is respect.

If your client constantly tries to low-ball you, sends you poorly written or poorly proofed scripts, micro-manages your performances, or takes forever to pay you, they don’t respect you. If they don’t respect you, don’t work with them!

Respect is a two-way street, you know. If you are always trying to get the maximum amount of money from every client every time, slack on your auditions because “they don’t count” or you’re saving your good performance for the booking, don’t communicate in a timely manner, and talk smack about them online, then you don’t respect your client. Your client is not just a cash register waiting to be pried open. They are people. Respect them the way you want to be respected.
