Voiceovers And Dreams – The Not Silent Blog 11/8/16

Last week I had a conversation with a friend about dreams. Not the kind you have when you’re asleep, the kind you have about what you want to do with your life.

For years I have been saying that artists dream and businesses envision.

When I say artists dream I think of an aspiring voice talent or other starving-artist with little or no training who drifts hither and yon scratching for work, praying for their big break, imagining what they’ll do when they’re rich & famous, and having the audacity to be surprised when 20 years later they’re still broke & wondering what the hell happened.

When I say businesses envision, I mean they actually write down a plan containing specific goals and hold themselves accountable to it.

Which is more important: the dream or the plan?

TIP OF THE WEEK

When it comes to achieving success, having dreams are critical. To realize those dreams, you must have a plan. Most aspiring voice talents fail because they don’t know how to align their dreams with a sound plan.

But Tom, getting a cheap demo, buying a USB microphone, and praying for my big break while I audition my face off on a pay-to-play website is a sound plan, right?

It’s certainly a plan, but a sound plan? How many people does that actually work out for?

If you want to align your dreams with a sound plan, write a business plan FIRST!!! Not third, not 27th, first. Determine how you will get your training, develop a brand, produce a demo, build a home studio, and how to budget for it.

Sounds hard? Tough noogies. If you want to live your dreams, you need to live in the real world. A professional is someone who does what needs to be done even when they don’t feel like it!
